Historical Inspiration from the 14th Century
Forged from 18 gauge mild steel, this visored bascinet is inspired by a relief from the Palazzo del Bargello. This helmet is designed to protect your head during LARP combat, light sparring, and costuming. This carved relief depicts a mounted Italian knight wearing a helmet known as a great bascinet on account of its hinged visor. The depiction dates back to the early 14th Century, between 1300 to 1325 specifically. True to its historical inspiration, this Italian bascinet has a hinged design with intricate details. Please keep in mind this helmet will arrive to you coated in a layer of oil to protect it from rust.
Starting from the top, this 14th Century Italian bascinet has a comb-like ridge across the top of the skull that ends in a point. Down the back, it has a riveted plate protecting the back of the neck and the head when worn. In front, the riveted plates that form the cheek guards meet in the middle to protect the chin.
The real focal point of the helmet is the hinged visor. This visor reflects sugarloaf helmets from earlier medieval styles. The visor has a raised ridge down the front to better deflect enemy attacks from bladed weapons. This 14th Century Italian helmet has a latched peg system to open and close the visor. There are two latching pegs along the upper right side of the wearer’s head. One is right above the brow while the other is above the ear. To lift the visor, simply raise it above these pegs until it naturally rests on the peg above the ear. To close it, lift the visor off the peg, then press the peg down, then lower the visor until it clicks into place.
The visor is riveted with a crusader’s cross for added detail and reinforcement. Each arm of the cross ends in a trefoil accent. There are vents on each side of the cross for breathability and air circulation. When the visor is lifted, you get unhindered visibility. Inside, this 14th Century visored helmet has a leather chin strap and cotton padding. You can wear it without your arming cap or add your own preferred padding.
