If your cosplay or reenactment character requires the look of a medieval monk, why not wear the Franciscan Monk Habit as your costume? This medieval monk outfit has five pieces. The set of brown garments includes a robe, scapular, mantle, hood, and a cord belt. All of the pieces are cotton.
Starting with the robe, this full-length garment has a rounded neckline and long sleeves. Traditionally, as pictured above, the scapular lays over the top of the robe. It is similar to a medieval tabard or surcoat in that it is sleeveless and open at the sides. It also has a rounded neckline.
Then, the mantle covers the shoulders, while the separate hood covers the head. The hood has a pointed shape. Finally, the white rope-like belt wraps around the waist and has knotted ends. This style of belt has the name of Franciscan cincture.
This medieval religious costume is ideal for historical reenactments as the outfit is a replica of the original medieval outfits. You can also easily wear it to a Ren faire or LARP event. It makes a great Friar Tuck or Friar Laurence outfit.
The Franciscans were founded by Francis of Assisi in 1209. This outfit is a replica of the ones worn by the First Order of Franciscans. It is comprised solely of monks, informally known as friars. This is in contrast to the Second or Third orders, which are all women or a mix of men and women respectively. In the medieval world, this order included commoners and knights amongst others.
Please note that this item is made by hand from natural materials. Therefore, it may vary slightly from what is shown above.
