The Scots were not without their own mercenary force in the Middle Ages, and theirs were, locally, some of the best fighters around. This Gallowglass Sword is based on the preferred weapons of that group, as well as carrying their name! The Gallowglass were, essentially, Norse-Gaelic clans of Scotsmen who were displayed into Ireland after choosing the wrong side in the Wars of Scottish Independence. They were a hardy and heavily armored troop, one that favored heavy weapons like this two-handed sword. This impressive recreation features a straight-edged blade with a gentle taper, which draws the long edge down to a fine point, ensuring that cut, cleave, or stab, this blade looks like it will perform quite well, indeed. The sword is also unique in that it features four fullers – two extremely short ones on the edge, with two longer ones running about one-third the length of the blade near the center. The straight quillons of the guard are adorned with triple-forked tips at their ends, while the leather-wrapped hilt is capped with a classic ring pommel, to give it an iconic and classic Irish look. A beautiful merger of Scottish and Irish, Gaelic and Norse, this Gallowglass Sword is a stunning recreation, and a sword that any warrior, armored or not, Irish or not, would love to have, either at their side or hanging on their wall.
