The Crusades were a long period of history noted for their bloody conflict and strife. Knights acting on orders from the Pope grabbed their swords and shields and marched across Europe on their long pilgrimage to the Middle East, weapon in hand, in order to “liberate” the Holy Land from what they perceived as heretics and unbelievers. The results of these crusades resonate well into the modern era – and one of these is the design of these iconic swords as reproduced by our Crusader’s Holy Sword.
As the main melee weapon of these knights, the humble double-edged Arming sword took on new properties. These swords, with their long, straight blades and their straight, sturdy cross guards and hilts, became a representation of the faith of these warriors; while it was undoubtedly a weapon, the hilt of the sword resembled a crucifix. Many would even find a priest before battle to bless their weapons, turning a simple sword into a magic weapon in their own eyes, a holy sword that would serve them faithfully in combat against their foes.
This Crusader’s Holy Sword might not be a consecrated or sanctified sword but it’s exactly the type of melee weapon that a crusader would have wanted on their side. The two-toned blade of this sword is simple yet striking, with polished steel edges offset by a darkened spine. Inscribed in gold lettering down the center of the sword blade of the Holy Sword is the phrase “Non nobis Domine, non nobis sed nomini tuo da gloriam.” This Latin phrase translates to, “Not to us God, not to us, but to you goes the glory.”
That’s not all that makes this holy sword stand out from all the other swords on the battlefield. The hilt of this sword weapon is just as impressive as the rest of it, thanks to how the simple brown grip of the Holy Sword is embellished by bronze-toned chains and small bronze emblems near the guard. The weapon features a small cross decoration in burnished bronze on the guard, and The medallion-style pommel also features that same classic crusader’s cross that swords of the period were known for.
All of these features make this Holy Sword the ultimate crusader weapon, ready to cross swords with enemies of the faith left and right. Today, of course, it’s best left as the centerpiece of your sword or weapon collection. That’s why we’ve included a simple yet stunning wooden plaque that makes displaying the weapon quite easy.
