Availability: 7 in stock

This reproduction 22ct gold plated aureus coin is made from lead-free pewter and refers to Hadrians safe return after travelling abroad and to the strength and security of the government. The coin shows a bust of Hadrian on one side and Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fate and luck, seated holding a rudder and cornucopia on the other. The coin is held in a clear plastic blister and is supplied in full color pamphlet style packaging, complete with images and historical information of both the coin and life of Hadrian.

Hadrian became Emperor in 117AD and due to his policy of peace through strength, his reign was marked by a general lack of major military activity. The Emperor travelled extensively and spent more than half of his reign, until his death in 138AD, outside Italy.

Hadrian is best known for the 73.5 mile long stone and turf fortification across northern Britain, which began during his reign in 122AD. Hadrians Wall was 3 meters wide and 5 meters high, and extended from the River Tyne to the River Solway. It was built to prevent military raids by the Pictish tribes to the north and to improve economic stability in the Roman province of Britannia, to the south.
