Expert Craftsmanship

Crafted from cold cast bronze, this stunning Greek mythology statue depicts the poet Orpheus with his wife Eurydice fleeing Cerberus, one of the guardians of the Underworld. Every detail is painted by hand. Orpheus, son of a Muse and the king of Thrace according to some tales, has intricate realistic muscle texture and an outfit similar to depictions of him in the mythology. Starting from the top, Orpheus has short curly hair with a realistic texture. Like in Greek mythology, Orpheus is looking back towards Eurydice and Cerberus, breaking his promise to never look back at Eurydice as they escape the Underworld. This clever little detail references the mythology and hints at a tragic future captured by this dynamic bronze statue. Further down, Orpheus has a carved armlet on his right arm and holds a realistically carved lyre in his left. The lyre has realistic strings carved into its body. The strings are complemented by an intricately carved tree and a studded base just below. Upon closer inspection, one can see Orpheus wears a Greek himation, also known as a mantle thrown over the left shoulder. The himation is textured to look like real fabric.

Behind Orpheus is an equally detailed depiction of Eurydice, the tragic wife of Orpheus who died and was sent to the Underworld. Eurydice’s hair is short, curly, and textured to look like real hair. Eurydice also wears a realistic himation, covering her chest and most of her lower body. The mantle billows in the imaginary wind, adding a sense of movement to the design. With a hand outstretched over Cerberus, Eurydice is depicted holding Orpheus close to her body and is seemingly unwilling to go back to the Underworld.

Moving toward the back, the iconic three-headed dog of Hades leaps after the fleeing lovers. Each dog head is realistically crafted with fangs and open maws, making it look like they’re snapping at Orpheus and Eurydice. Cerberus wears three studded collars, one for each head. The hound of Hades has an intricately carved snake for a tail, a unique detail that sets this classic mythological creature apart. The base is textured to look like the rocky ground of the Underworld. Cerberus is depicted standing on a large rock while Orpheus and Eurydice are fleeing on flatter ground. A plaque at the front of this statue reads “Orpheus and Eurydice fleeing the Underworld” in Greek font.
