Vikings

The Vikings were Norse or Scandinavian people famous for being pirates, explorers, and merchants who raided and colonized areas in Europe. Norsemen used their longships or Viking ships to travel as far as Russia, North Africa, and North America, spreading their culture and engraving their legend on history. The main period of Viking exploration is known as the Viking Age. Viking weapons and armour indicated a Norsemans social status. A wealthy Viking would own a Viking helmet, Viking shield, chainmail shirt and a coat made from animal skin or reindeer hides. A poorer Viking may only own a single weapon and a shield. The Viking shield and spear were the basic armaments of a warrior, while others would carry a knife known as a seax, a bow, or a Viking axe. We carry an excellent selection of Viking merchandise, including reenactment clothing, Viking jewelry, historical coins, Viking statues, and a variety of Norse weapons.

Viking Axes

Certain historical axes used by the Vikings were also called Danish axes, an early type of polearm. Viking axes are typically made light enough to withstand throwing, crafted with forged heads and hardened edges. Other Viking axes were designed for punching through enemy armour or cleaving helms in close combat due to their relatively short cutting edges. The Viking axe was not only used for warfare, serving as a tool on farms and for cutting timber for their Viking ships. We carry many types of Norse axes, including Danish axes, Viking throwing axes, Mammen axes, bearded axes, and Francisca axes. We also offer Viking replica weapons inspired by the hit show following the life of the legendary Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok. Many of our Viking axes feature authentic designs and are fully functional for reenactments.

Viking Clothing

The Vikings frequently crafted their clothing from wool, a material which helped to protect them from fierce winters and could be hand-crafted with relative ease. Viking men often wore long Viking tunics and trousers, which were held up by a belt or sash. In cold weather, Vikings added a fur-trimmed cloak or long-sleeved jerkin to this ensemble. Many Viking cloaks fastened at the shoulder with a brooch or a pin. For foot protection, Viking warriors often wore leather boots. Viking women wore similar clothing to men, often substituting a long shift with a Norse overdress in place of a tunic. Cloaks, shawls, and head kerchiefs were also worn by women. We carry an excellent assortment of Norse clothing like rus pants, dresses, tunics, Viking shirts, and Viking shoes that work well for Renaissance fairs, reenactments, and stage productions.

Viking Shields

The Vikings used shields for more than just defense against the blows of an opponent. Viking shields were typically round, a design derived from earlier Germanic shields. A wooden Viking shield was often made from planks of fir, pine, willow, or linden wood. The design usually featured a hole in the center that supported a hand grip covered by a metal boss. An iconic Viking vessel, the Gokstad ship, offered places along its railing for these round wooden shields to be hung. Towards the end of the Viking Age, other designs began to grow in popularity, such as the Norman kite shield. Here you can find many Norse shields inspired by the ones used by these historical warriors. Many of these replica shields display colorful graphics and patterns on their front, such as Viking dragons, Viking knotwork, arrows, and spirals. We carry battle-ready shields, as well as decorative shields that look great on display.

Viking Spears

The most common and important weapon wielded by a Viking warrior was the Norse spear. Viking spears typically feature metal spear heads attached to wooden shafts of 6 to 10 feet long. The head of a Viking warrior spear was about 7 to 24 inches long with a tendency towards longer heads in the late Viking age. Some of the Norse spear heads had wings called krokspjot, or a barbed spear. Viking warriors used their war spears for throwing and thrusting with one hand. We carry many functional spears, spear heads, and wooden staves perfect for reenactments, combat, and collecting. Our inventory includes designs like Viking thrusting spears, Viking throwing spears, short-bladed spears, and more. These Viking polearms look great on display when they are not in use.
