In some circles of martial arts, mastery of the jian is regarded as the penultimate expression of physical technique. Indeed, many martial arts and martial artists still train with the jian, and no better way to lightly train than with our wooden Tai Chi Sword.
Pre-dating most martial arts, the jian is an extremely old style of sword that has been used in forms of combat throughout China for centuries. The effectiveness and ability of the blade allow it to adapt and be used in many different ways, and the jian itself is a cultural icon. Just look at any Chinese Wuxia film and you’ll see jian-wielding characters pulling off mystical, gravity-defying stunts with their weapons!
As the jian is synonymous with the ancient art of tai chi, this martial arts sword is often simply just referred to as the “tai chi sword” today. An actual jian sword isn’t exactly a good idea for training, which is why a wooden tai chi sword is the perfect practice weapon. In fact, you can unlock your own inner Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon thanks to one of our wooden tai chi sword practice weapons!
This wooden tai chi sword has the typical classic form of a traditional jian. The blade is straight and double-edged, although as a wooden sword, no actual cutting edge exists. The guard is broad and possesses a marginal upward curve, and the grip is slightly convex, swelling slightly outwards, to provide a secure fit into the palm. While it’s not a requirement for a wooden tai chi sword, these practice swords also come with a red tassel attached as a form of traditional decoration. Our jian also comes with a wooden scabbard with an attractive dragon print, another traditional touch that will help put you in the proper frame of mind before you begin your next light training session.
Like any other skill, sword-fighting takes practice and effort to learn. The practice of any martial arts can be well-spent when done with a proper weapon, and this Wooden Tai Chi Sword will have you honing your craft safely and as authentically as possible. In fact, the only way you’ll have a more authentic experience is by hiking up a mountain in the Chinese wilderness and training under a curmudgeonly white-haired martial arts master. If you can’t handle that, though, our wooden practice tai chi sword is the next best thing for sure!
