Monk Habit – Dominican

Why not wear the Dominican Monk Habit if you are looking to cosplay or reenact as a medieval monk? This costume is a replica of the medieval outfit. This medieval monk outfit has five pieces. The set of garments includes a robe, scapular, mantle, hood, and a cord belt. All of the pieces are cotton.

Starting with the robe, this full-length black garment has a rounded neckline and long sleeves. Traditionally, as pictured above, the scapular lays over the top of the robe. It is similar to a medieval tabard or surcoat in that it is sleeveless and open at the sides. The white scapular also has a rounded neckline.

Then, the black mantle covers the shoulders, while the separate hood covers the head. The black hood has a pointed shape. Finally, the white rope-like belt wraps around the waist and has knotted ends. This style of belt is known as a cincture.

This medieval religious costume is ideal for historical reenactments as the outfit is a replica of the original medieval outfits. You can also easily wear it to a Ren faire or LARP event.

Dominican History

The Dominican Order was founded in 1215 by Dominic of Caleruega. This order is also known as the Order of Preachers as it was originally founded to combat heresy and to preach. This mission and its subsequent intellectual tradition put it at the forefront of medieval intellectual life. The order includes friars, nuns, sisters, and lay people.
