Nothing is quite so significant to a ship, laden with valuables, as sinking, especially when the recipient has dire need of the precious cargo. That is the history on which the Mel Fishers Atocha Model Ship is based. The Atocha was the most famous of a fleet of Spanish ships that sunk in 1622, just off what would eventually become known as the Florida Keys, carrying a bevy of precious and valuable items. This model depicts, in a general sense, what the Atocha is believed to have looked like. Given that only part of the ship was found in 1985, the actual shape of the whole ship is difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain. However, the model was made to be as accurate as possible. The ship is hand-crafted and painted in traditional Spanish colors with beautiful sails. Discovered by Mel Fisher after nearly seventeen years of searching, this model ship commemorates the discovery and the ship itself. This model ship makes a great display piece for history buffs and nautical enthusiasts.
