The standard shape of the medieval sword was the same throughout the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. These swords had a wheel shaped-pommel at the end of the handle, simple cross bar guard, and a broad blade. This letter opener is based on the medieval swords of the fourteenth century. During this period the length of the blades increased in length and would have extended up to 50 inches. To balance the extra weight the grip was made longer and the wheel pommel was made larger and heavier. Blades were generally broad and double-edged, and a single channel running down the blade was very popular.
