The Scots were not without their own variants of traditional medieval weapons. This Lochaber Axe looks like it would be a Scottish spear, but in reality, it was used more similarly to the medieval halberd, being capable of both stabbing and hacking. A traditional lochaber axe was relatively short as far as pole arms go, utilizing a shorter haft to provide a greater level of control. This weapon features a broad, spear-like head that is sharpened along one edge, creating a cleaver-like design that is as effective for cutting and hacking as it is for stabbing. The back of the weapon also features a wicked looking hook, which was designed and implemented to allow a Scottish foot soldier to easily yank a mounted warrior off of his horse. The head of this impressive axe measures approximately 19.75 inches long and is crafted from carbon steel, while the included hardwood haft measures approximately 42 inches long. It may not look like much, but that just means that this Lochaber Axe was made more for the common troops, possessing an effective and efficient design that would turn any common foot soldier into a deadly foe.
