In 1296 Edward I invaded Scotland and declared himself King of that realm. His defeat by Sir William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in the following year forced him to retreat. In 1298 he again invaded Scotland and defeated the Scottish army at the Battle of Falkirk. Wallace was captured and executed in 1305. In 1307 Edward set out for a third time to subdue the Scots but died en route.
