Hadrian became Emperor in 117AD and due to his policy of peace through strength, his reign was marked by a general lack of major military activity. The Emperor travelled extensively and spent more than half of his reign, until his death in 138AD, outside Italy. Hadrian is best known for the 73.5 mile long stone and turf fortification across northern Britain, which began during his reign in 122AD. Hadrians Wall was 3 meters wide and 5 meters high, and extended from the River Tyne to the River Solway. It was built to prevent military raids by the Pictish tribes to the north and to improve economic stability in the Roman province of Britannia, to the south.
