Civil War swords were more effective during the early years of the war. As modern weapons such as breech-loaders, repeating rifles, and machine guns were introduced, swords became less effective and could only be used in close battle. The Civil War Youth Sword is a 3-bar pattern sabre that was downsized for the young trooper. It is 27.5 inches long overall and not as costly to make as the larger swords. It was used predominantly by the Confederates who were outnumbered by the Union force through the entire war and needed young recruits to fight as the war dragged on.
