Civil War

There are many things that drive men to fight in wars, and rarely are they so simple or so cut-and-dry as to be laid down as just one reason. The American Civil War was no different. This war began in 1861 and ended in 1865, was among the most costly of American wars in terms of human life, although it is also a defining point in our national history and heritage. That is why it gets its own category here at Dark Knight Armoury. Many would say that this war was fought about slavery, and to a degree, many would be right, but it was also fought about state rights, legal secession, unity, and so much more. Division between the once-United States consisted of the Union, which included northern states and Border States, such as Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware, and Maryland, and the Confederacy, which consisted of all Southern states. The first battle fought in the war was fought at Fort Sumter, in April of 1861, and many more were to follow in the four long years of Civil War that would embroil the nation. A total of 8,000 hostilities were said to be exchanged during the course of the Civil War, over many memorable battles, and of those many conflicts, 384 were large enough to be considered at least limited in size, involving small detachments of armies. Among the more famous battles are the two Battles of Bull Run, also known as First Manassas and Second Manassas, as well as the Battle of Gettysburg, which gave rise to the famous speech delivered by President Lincoln on Thursday, November 19, 1863, four and a half months after the battle had been fought. The end of the war came on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox, Virginia, where commander of the Confederate army, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered unconditionally to his contemporary, General Ulysses S. Grant, who led the Union armies. There was still much to come, though, for this war had a high cost. Among soldiers, casualties are listed as high as 750,000, with an unknown number of civilian losses, and the war left the South in shambles. It was, before, during, and after, a turbulent time in our nation, but one that influenced our course, and still remains a powerful force, even to this day.
